Commonwealth Arena

Construction of the Commonwealth Arena began on a 10.5-hectare site in Dalmarnock at the beginning of 2010, and is due to be open in Autumn 2012.

The building consists of a multi-purpose space capable of hosting a wide range of sports including Indoor Athletics, together with the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and a community sports centre, sports hall, outdoor 5-a-side pitches, extensive health and fitness facilities plus an indoor roller sports park. It will also operate as the administrative base for national sports federations and Glasgow Life's Sport Development Unit.

The construction has involved a workforce of 200, including 20 new apprentices. many of whom were local people thanks to the use of community benefit clauses by Glasgow City Council in the tendering process.

The Commonwealth Arena can accommodate up to 7,500 spectators, with the largest hall holding 5,000 spectators, while the Velodrome has a 2,500 capacity.

The facility will be managed by Glasgow Life and they will be transferring some of their experienced staff from existing sports centres to work at the Arena and Velodrome but will also be recruiting fifty-five new staff for a range of positions but predominantly Leisure Attendants.  Clyde Gateway, through a partnership with Glasgow Life,

began a specially designed training programme in January 2012 to provide opportunities for local residents aged between 16 and 25 to land a post at the new facility when it opens in Autumn 2012.

All badminton at the 2014 Games, together with the track cycling events, will beheld at the Commonwealth Arena.
