It was back in 2008, just a few weeks after Clyde Gateway had embarked on our regeneration efforts, that we agreed to provide support to help a Dalmarnock teenager achieve her dream of taking part in the Mauy Thai Boxing World Championships in South Korea.

Amy Pirnie returned to a hero’s welcome, carrying the belt which had been given to her when she triumphed in the championships, adding to the British title she had earned a few weeks previously.

Eleven years later, and Amy continues to make waves in her sport, having returned recently from the United States as the world super-flyweight champion, in a bout that was broadcast on the CBS Sports channel.

Now aged 25, and now living in the Athletes’ Village in the heart of the Clyde Gateway area, Amy told her story to Jonathan Geddes of the Rutherglen Reformer.

“I was excited to be out in America to begin with. It took nearly a day to get there, so I had to train and get used to the time difference. It was a real surprise to then knock out my opponent in just 47 seconds meaning the post-fight interviews lasted longer than the bout, but it was an amazing experience.”

It was actually the second world title picked up by Amy within a month. The American bout was for a world title under the Lion Fight promotions arm of the sport and came on the back of her traveling to Rome where she won the Enfusion 50kg world title. Both wins came against opponents who were enjoying the advantage of fighting on home soil.

Amy trains at a gym in Rutherglen and combines her participation in Muay Thai with a day job in sports therapy and coaching work with kids. She told the Reformer, “I really love doing that. I took it on last year and it’s not just about the competition, it’s about getting kids active and showing them healthy things they can become involved in.

From her base in Rutherglen, Amy offers personal training to teams, groups or individuals, providing a a comfortable and stable environment to train, helping with confidence, drive and willingness to learn.
